Speaker opened floor for discussion

In response to the previous articles, editorials and letters to the editor regarding the Baptist Student Union's presentation, "The Homosexuality Box," I would like to voice a concern that the aforementioned coverage has painted a deceiving picture of the event and its outcomes. I am not accusing any one person or article of blatantly trying to misrepresent the program or its results; however, the combination of the past articles could lead a person who did not attend the program to view it negatively.

The original intent of the event was to dispel beliefs that "God hates fags" and to present a more loving viewpoint from someone who was once actively homosexual. With that goal in mind, I think that a majority of the 100 plus people who attended, both the "supporters" and the "skeptical," would agree the program was a success, especially in that it opened up an opportunity for discussion. Although no final consensus was reached, I strongly agree with Steve Houldsworth in his hope for continuing dialogue between the groups.

Thus far, all parties involved have been willing to ask questions, listen and share ideas respectfully, and for that I want to thank everyone. Furthermore, as one of the organizers of "The Homosexuality Box," I apologize for the "ambiguity" of the fliers, which was intended to prevent any pre-judgement or unwarranted hostility toward the event. I am thankful for Webster Pride's participation and willingness to maintain respect.

Although Dan Colombo was prepared for the type of audience to which he spoke, he may not have realized the lasting effect he has had on this campus. Overall, I am excited about the possibilities that are currently underway for BSU and Webster Pride to work together.
