WVA rent increase leads to residents looking off-campus

With the rent for the Webster Village Apartments (WVA) set to increase in August, some students are moving out and looking for a new place to live.

Rent in the WVA for an academic year next year will be $615 per-person for a two-bedroom apartment and $515 for a four-bedroom apartment. An efficiency, a one-bedroom apartment, will cost $800 per person.

Holland Saltsman, the managing director for the WVA, doesn't see a change in the number of students who want to live in the apartments, but said she sees a change in the number of tenants returning.

"The number of people applying has remained the same," Saltsman said. "However, the number of people who have not returned leases or cancelled returned leases has increased from years past."

Because of students canceling leases, Saltsman thinks students on the waiting list will be able to get into the WVA.

"We will be able to house much more people from the waiting list such as transfer students, site transfers, international students and commuters in much greater numbers than in years past," Saltsman said.

For students who will not be returning to the WVA, there is a list of 17 apartments in the area that list rates and deposit information as well as the distance from campus. Students can get the list from the WVA clubhouse.

Amanda VcClos, a sophomore flute performance major, is moving out of the apartments because of the rent increase.

VcClos says that she is still looking for a new apartment. "They have sheets on apartments that are in the area," VcClos said. "But we decided to find an apartment on our own."

Like VcClos, Kirsten Gandenberger, a sophomore dance major, is also moving out of the apartments next year due to the rent increases.

Gandenberger currently pays $435 a month for rent. She has found two apartments that are relatively close to campus. One apartment would cost $550 a month while the other is $700 a month. But with splitting the rent with roommates, Gandenberger plans to spend anywhere from $200 to $300 a month which she believes is a big savings.
