The Webster men's and women's basketball seasons came to an end last week with a pair of first-round SLIAC tourney losses by both teams. Of course, both teams would still like to be playing right now, but they aren't, and that sucks. So, I decided to list a few of my personal favorite moments from this season to remind them of how cool they were to watch and cover all year.

Here are my personal, top six season highlights:

Men: 1. Scott Spinner putting up silly numbers against Greenville and Fontbonne. In a week where the conference would recognize him as its player of the week, Spinner went for 24 points against Fontbonne on Jan. 25. Three nights later the junior guard dropped 34 on Greenville going 12 of 16 from the floor including a ridiculous 8 of 9 from downtown.

2. At home against Maryville Feb. 1. The Gorloks beat the eventual SLIAC champion Saints 74-73 in front of an electric Grant Gym crowd. Four Webster players had more than 12 points and the team shot 55 percent from the floor in the game. The icing? Spinner's free throw shooting down the stretch locking it up.

3. The second game versus Fontbonne at home Feb. 18. How could a loss be a highlight? Calm down, hotshot, here's why. This was one of the most thrilling games of the season that had it all: the shot clock buzzer beating fall away three point dagger, a last second Spinner drive with a shot to win it and pin drop audible silence when it didn't go down.

Women: 1. Lauren Lux. Almost enough said. That was a great moment and I'm glad I got a chance to see it. As a side note, Greenville was recognized by the SLIAC with its Sportsmanship Award because, and I can only assume here, of the teams role in that special night.

2. Hot streak. Webster won 12 of its last 14 including a house defending 10 of 11 in Grant Gym.

3. Putting up 87 points against Principia at home on Jan. 21. The team went 4 for 5 from downtown in the first half and finished with four players with 12 or more points. Easily the best performance by the offense all year.

Journal players of the year

Women: Senior Guard Kim Sheets. Sheets scored 359 points this season, averaging 14 a game. Sheets played almost every minute of every game and garnered numerous awards along the way including SLIAC First Team All Conference, SLIAC All Tourney First Team and Milikin All Tourney First Team.

Men: Sophomore forward Darrin Hoggatt. Hoggatt's steady play gives him the nod over Spinner. After being named the starter Jan. 28 against Greenville, Hoggatt had ten straight games with double-digit point totals, averaging 16 a game during that stretch. Hoggatt was named to the SLIAC First Team All-Conference.
