Although the 1-1-1 record for the week of Sept. 11 may not indicate success, the Gorlok women's soccer team is making big strides, Head Coach Luigi Scire said. With a 5-1-1 overall record, the Gorloks are more than confident of hoisting another SLIAC championship banner.
The tough week for the Gorloks began Sept. 13 as the team squared off with Washington University. This promised to be an exciting rematch from last year's 1-0 nail-biter which the Gorloks lost.
A deadlocked first half kept the game scoreless until a Washington University shot hit the crossbar and landed right in the lap of Wash U.'s Lauren Mehner, who polished it off for a 1-0 lead.
"That goal kind of caught us off guard," Scire said. "It was a bad luck situation."
The Bears capitalized just 49 seconds later when Mehner scored yet again, putting the Gorloks in a 2-0 hole headed into halftime.
"I told them that the score did not indicate the way we were playing," Scire said. "We made some mental mistakes, but we were able to hang with them physically. But if you make those mental mistakes against Wash U., they will make you pay."
After a Wash U. goal about eight minutes into the second half, Webster's Katie Meeks made the score 3-1 with a 70th minute goal, and for just a moment the Gorloks had gained some momentum. However, the Bears turned it on once again and got two more goals putting the game out of reach with a final score of 5-1.
"We played a lot better than last year," sophomore midfielder Kelly Strecker said. "Despite the score of the game, we actually had a better offense this year."
The Gorloks were out shot by the Bears 12-4 and goaltending time was split between senior Heather Schaefer and sophomore Jessica Kozeny. However, Scire felt that the numbers and the score were deceiving.
"Mary Bunt had a great scoring opportunity in the first half and if she converts that, it is a completely different game," Scire said. "Anyone who has not seen us play might think, 'My God, it was a blowout,' but I would put this year's team out on the field with Wash U. before last year's team."
