Students in the School of Communications and the art department are required to participate in a review of their class work before they graduate. Portfolio review takes place every semester for students who have completed sophomore-level work.
Art department
Art students' work is reviewed the second semester of their sophomore year by art faculty, said Tom Lang, chair of the art department. That is when students declare their major and are considered for acceptance into the art program.
The art department is holding a major acceptance review Oct. 27 in which students declaring their major as art must present their work to Lang and the rest of the art faculty. Lang said major portfolio reviews always take place the week after fall or spring break.
Lang said the purpose of the portfolio reviews is to look at deficiencies in students' work and make suggestions to help improve those areas. He also said it increases students' confidence when presenting their work in front of others.
Art students attempting to receive a bachelor of fine arts degree must undergo a portfolio review of their work within their major field in order to be considered a candidate for graduation.
"BFA students show work only in their emphasis," Lang said. "Photography students show work in photography, painting students show work in painting … These reviews are longer and more rigorous."
The BFA portfolio review will be held Sept. 29.
School of Communications
When students in the School of Communications have completed sophomore-level work, they must present their work to a panel of their teachers to ensure their work is progressing in a positive direction.
"You just like to see a consistent path of growth," said Barry Hufker, a professor of audio production.
The School of Communications holds portfolio review in order to recommend classes to students and make sure students are completing work in the area in which they hope to work after graduation, Hufker said. Portfolio review is set up to simulate a job interview in the hopes that students will gain a comfort level while presenting their work.
"(Students) should present their work in a way that would prepare them for a job interview," said Gary Ford, professor of public relations.
The School of Communications is holding portfolio review Sept. 25 through 29. Sign-ups took place the previous week.
Students undergoing portfolio review compile sophomore-level or higher class work for which they received an A or B grade. Requirements for each student vary by major, and some majors, such as journalism, are not required to undergo portfolio review.
Students in the School of Communications and the art department are required to present an essay about their work in addition to their portfolio. Art and media students that need further information about portfolio reviews should contact their department associates.
