After six new officers were sworn in, allocating funds from the Student Grant Fund became the main focus of the Sept. 26 Student Government Association meeting. At the adjournment of the meeting, more than $5,000 had been awarded to five different student groups.
"I love it," said President Dee Goines. "If students can benefit, I don't have a problem with giving away a lot of money."
The money allocated from the Student Grant Fund is intended to assist students pursuing educational and leadership opportunities outside of the university. The fund starts with $17,000 for the entire year. Student organizations are encouraged to request money from the fund, but they cannot ask for more than $250 per member and are only allowed to make one request per semester. The maximum allocation is $1,500.
Vice President Kendra Davis said the funds can be useful to student organizations, but in many cases are only a fraction of what students need to attend conferences and events outside of the university.
"When 20 people want to go to an event, $1,500 doesn't do a whole lot," she said.
Davis said in her experience, it is not standard for five different student organizations to ask for funds from the Student Grant Fund at the same meeting.
Funds allocated from the Student Grant Fund Sept. 26 included:
• The Audio Engineering Society was given $1,500 to travel to San Francisco for a conference. Students will have educational opportunities to network and attend lectures.
• The Anime Society and Potterheads Anonymous wereallocated $1,500 to attend the Archon Conference. Potterheads will contribute to the event by teaching Quidditch, Anime members will enter costumes and show fantasy-related student films.
• Webster Campus Crusade for Christ was awarded $1,320 for their annual Missouri Fall Getaway, being held near the Lake of the Ozarks. The event begins Sept. 29, and includes a speaker and social opportunities.
