For the first time since the 2006-07 golf season began, junior Brandon Glen was going to have a weekend off. He was finally going to spend some time with his girlfriend and catch up on homework. That was until his phone rang at 11 p.m. Sept. 22.

On the other end was Associate Coach Andrew Belsky, asking Glen if he would be willing to accompany the Gorloks to Dubuque, Iowa, for the Clarke College Oktoberfest Sept. 24.

With a busy schedule looming for the Gorloks, Belsky decided to use the Clark College Oktoberfest as an opportunity to rest some of the Gorloks' key players. Both team captain Matt Lorenz and 2005 Player-of-the-Year Scott Hargis were scratched from the tournament.

Glen was supposed to be off as well. However, when senior Brian Chackes withdrew for personal reasons, Glen was called upon to step in as a last-minute
replacement.

He did.

He then proceeded to dominate a tournament he wasn't even supposed to be in by shooting a two-day score of 161 (17 over the two-day par of 144) and capturing second place in the tournament.

Similar to his second place finish at the Gorlok Invitational earlier this month, Glen attributed his success to his short game.
"The putting kind of saved me," Glen said.

Glen wasn't the only Gorlok to have success in Iowa. Junior Andy Ahlering finished in a tie for sixth place with a two-day score of 165 and freshman Jake Black finished in a ninth place tie with a score of 166.

The Gorloks captured second place in the tournament with a total team score of 661. Team par was 576.

Overall, Coach Belsky said he was pleased with his team's second-place finish, and the fact that three Gorloks finished in the Top 10 among individuals despite the windy weather conditions that plagued the tournament. However, Belsky was most impressed by Glen.

"I was happy for him," Belsky said. "He managed to pull through when he was supposed to have the weekend off."

Next up for the Gorloks is a two-tournament road trip that will take the team to Iowa and Wisconsin for four days starting Sept. 29.

As for Glen, his biggest challenge in the upcoming week may not be handling the rigors of two tournaments, but making up the lost weekend to his girlfriend.

"Leaving didn't make her real happy," Glen said.
