With a balance of suffocating defense and a relentless offensive attack, the Webster men's soccer team has reason to expect its early success to continue past the first month of the season.
After recording a loss and a tie in two of their first three games, Webster has rolled out four consecutive victories, with convincing wins over St. Louis Intercollegiate Athletic Conference opponents MacMurray College and Greenville College. Webster battled MacMurray Sept. 16 before going on the road to Greenville Sept. 23. In those two conference games, the Gorloks blanked the Highlanders and the Panthers with two 5-0 shutouts. Webster is 5-1-1 for the season and 2-0-0 in SLIAC play.
"We've created some real nice scoring chances," said Assistant Coach Alex Fritts. "And the good thing is we're finishing."
Webster took the lead in the first three minutes of their game against Greenville after a goal by sophomore Kyle Regan. The Gorloks lead 3-0 at the half.
"We came out pretty well," sophomore captain Kevin Fann said. "It was nice to jump on them early."
The Gorloks are not only finishing up front; they're dominating games defensively. In seven games, the Gorloks defense has allowed only six goals, while recording four shutouts in the process.
"We have a pretty solid lineup on defense," Fann said. "Once we get a lead, we feel our defense has it under control."
The Gorloks take pride in their defense, with everyone on the field including midfielders and strikers sagging back to help the back line of defenders.
"It all starts with our team defense," Fritts said. "That is definitely the nucleus of our team and how we approach each game."
While opposing teams are finding it difficult to produce offensively, the Gorloks have a plethora of offensive threats capable of scoring on any opportunity.
"We're getting scoring from so many different guys," Fritts said. "And it's a luxury when we've been posting big wins, not having the grind of a tight ballgame."
