After a year of fundraising, Webster's chapter of the Public Relations Student Society of America sent four students to the National PRSSA Conference in Salt Lake City.
"I think the conference definitely helped the organization and me professionally," said senior Amanda Gomez, a public relations major. "We learned ways to communicate as a team, fundraise and expand in strength and knowledge."
Four students voluntarily attended the conference- senior Antoinette Boyd, a public relations major; Gomez; senior Jessica Lackey, a public relations major, and senior Rebecca Sweat, a public relations major.
In past years, students interested in attending the annual conference were unable to attend because of money and other issues, said Gary Ford, PRSSA faculty adviser.
The society's fundraising efforts for the trip included a partnership with Nestle Purina, as well as support from the Public Relations Society of America and Dean Debra Carpenter's discretionary fund.
Senior Nick McGeehon, vice president of PRSSA and a legal studies major, said it cost $275 per person to register for the conference. This price doesn't include travel or food expenses. He said students had to contribute less than $100 for out-of-pocket expenses.
PRSSA received a $1,000 grant from the Student Government Association and Nestle Purina donated $550, the cost of two registration fees, in exchange for helping with the promotion of the spring 2006 Soulard Dog Parade.
Boyd said PRSSA told members about the conference at the first meeting of the semester. PRSSA was hoping to spark interest in the conference among members. She said few were interested, and ultimately there was enough money for four group members to attend the conference
"We realized just how important PRSA is to public relations professionals," Gomez said. "In other chapters, PRSSA is a class and is required along with an internship."
Sweat said she didn't think anyone knew what to expect from the convention because this is the first time any student from Webster was able to attend.
