The Webster golf team had hopes of being terrible hosts in the Gorlok Spring Invitational and dominating the event, but Maryville University didn't get the memo.

The Gorloks and Saints entered the second round of the two-day tournament tied for first with an overall team score of 300. The St. Louis Intercollegiate Athletic Conference rivals continued to battle throughout the second round. When the last putt was sank, Maryville escaped with a two-stroke victory in the tournament, edging Webster 614-616. Ten teams competed in the tournament, which was held March 25 at Forest Park Golf Course and March 26 at the Sunset Hills Country Club.

"We should've won," Associate Head Coach Tom Heyer said.

A pair of Gorloks finished in the top five in individual scoring. Junior Scott Hargis finished third overall, shooting a two-day total of 151 and freshman Jake Black came in fourth shooting 153.

The two-day par for individuals in the tournament was 142. Maryville's Chris Dale took home first place with a score of 146.

Despite the second place team finish and fourth place individual finish, Black was unsatisfied with the event's results.

"Fourth is not first," Black said. "I think we could have won if we had played a little better."

Co-captain and sophomore Allen Heeger agreed the second-place finish failed to meet the Gorloks' expectations, but tipped his hat to Maryville.

"I think we could have done a little bit better," Heeger said. "Nobody played real outstanding, but nobody played too terrible. Maryville went out and played really good on our course."

Webster was plagued by several problems in the tournament's second round. Black said he had difficulty on the fairway, while Associate Head Coach Andrew Belsky and Heeger both said the team had finishing holes strong.

"A few guys needed to make a couple of putts and I think we could have done all right," Heeger said.

The Gorloks will seek revenge against Maryville April 1 and 2 when the team competes in Maryville's Spring Invitational at Aberdeen Golf Course in Eureka, Mo.

"You always want to go to somebody else's home course and beat them," Belsky said.

The tournament is important to the Gorloks to even the score against Maryville. Webster will get an early look at the course where the SLIAC Championship Tournament will be held April 20 and 21.

"We need to go there, see the course and put on a good show," Belsky said.
