The Webster golf team went into the Maryville Spring Invitational looking for revenge after Maryville squeaked out a two-stroke victory over the Gorloks on Webster's course.
Instead, the Gorloks suffered from a case of deja vu. For the second consecutive week, Maryville upended Webster, edging the Gorloks 600-629 in the seven-team tournament April 1 and 2 at Aberdeen Golf Course in Eureka, Mo.
"Maryville played incredible (April 2)," Associate Head Coach Andrew Belsky said. "Whenever a team does that, you shake their hands and tip your hat to them."
Junior Andy Ahlering wasn't that impressed with the Maryville team.
"We could stare down Maryville and give them our best," Ahlering said. "I think we could beat them."
Three Gorloks cracked the top 10 in the tournament. Junior Scott Hargis led Webster with a second place finish and a score of 146, two strokes over the tournament's par of 144. Sophomore and Co-captain Allen Heeger and Ahlering finished seventh and eighth, respectively.
Ahlering said he knows the Gorloks need to start playing better.
"We all have something to prove," Ahlering said. "We've shown a little bit of life but we need to flourish under pressure filled opportunities."
The Maryville Spring Invitational allowed the Gorloks an early glimpse of the Aberdeen Golf Course - the place where the St. Louis Intercollegiate Athletic Conference Championship will be played April 20 and 21.
One thing the Gorloks will look to rectify before the SLIAC Championship is their putting. The short game has plagued the team early in the season - most noticeably in the pair of second place finishes to Maryville.
"We had a lot of trouble putting out there," Belsky said. "We're going to attempt to address that in the next couple of weeks."
