Issue date: 4/19/07 Section: News
After a moment of silence for the students of Virginia Tech, the April 17 Student Government Association meeting turned to formal business such as funding and club recognition. However, the concerns for student safety remained a focus that was revisited at the culmination of the meeting.

Senator-at-Large Josh King proposed discussion on possible plans of action Webster could institute to improve communication on Webster's campus in the event of a threatening situation.

President Gabe Bullard said the idea of a public address system such as an intercom is worth consideration, but may not be an efficient way to reach commuter students.

"We want to be careful not to be too reactionary and over the edge," Bullard said. "The beauty of colleges is that they are so open."

Ideas brought forth during the discussion included an announcement system that could run through emergency call boxes throughout campus or be could connected to the telephone system.

"We don't want to change the life of the students," said Emanuel da Silva, senator-at-large. "Hopefully there will be a thorough investigation of how things should work in an emergency situation."

No plan was established during the meeting, but John Ginsburg, director of the University Center and Campus Activities, encouraged SGA members to continue discussion and consideration of the issue among students as well as with upper level administration members.

Other business at the meeting included discussion of funding for the remainder of this school year as well as for next year. Comptroller Mac Ingram said the Allocation Fund now has about $3,350, which is enough to get SGA through the semester. The additional funds came from fees paid by 11 student groups.

Bullard said his recent request of more money for next year's Allocation Fund was denied by Deborah Dey, vice president of students and enrollment management. Bullard said there are about 20 funding requests within the university that "won't see the light of day."
