In two of junior Andy Ahlering's last three golf tournaments, he placed in the Top 10 on the leaderboard - but he wasn't satisfied.
Shortly before the Gorlok golfers traveled to Decatur, Ill., for Millikin University's Big Blue Classic April 13, Ahlering got a tip from one of his personal golf coaches. He was told to loosen his grip.
This tip in mind, Ahlering packed his bag and made his way to the Big Blue Classic. He used his new tip to finish with a score of 70 - one stroke under par and good enough for a second place finish among individuals. Ahlering was one of only three golfers out of the 112 participants to finish with a score under par. After the tournament, Ahlering credited his new grip for the success of his performance.
"At first it was uncomfortable, but I got used to it," Ahlering said.
Associate Head Coach Andrew Belsky was impressed by Ahlering's performance at the Big Blue Classic. Belsky said the team will need Ahlering if it is going to claim its third St. Louis Intercollegiate Athletic Conference Championship since 2003.
"Andy's a great golfer," Belsky said. "He has a lot of experience and can be a leader on the course. If we are going to succeed he's going to have to be a huge part of it."
Ahlering's score helped give the Gorloks a third place tie in the tournament with host Millikin University. Illinois Wesleyan University took home first place honors, while Lindenwood University was second in the 17-team tournament.
Junior Scott Hargis and sophomore co-captain Allen Heeger also were instrumental in the Gorloks' success. Hargis finished one over par with a score of 72 - good enough for fourth place among individuals. Heeger shot a 76 and finished in a tie for 14th place.
The performance of Ahlering, Hargis and Heeger clinched their spots as representatives for the Gorloks in the SLIAC Conference Championship April 20 and 21 at Aberdeen Golf Course in Eureka, Mo. However, the remaining two spots are up for grabs.
"We have three guys (Ahlering, Hargis, Heeger) who played really well and we have a couple guys still trying to find their games," Belsky said. "Hopefully, this weekend we'll have it put together."
Juniors Brandon Glen, Jason Sullivan and freshman Jake Black will compete against one another in a series of inner-squad matches throughout this week. The two who perform the best will occupy the final vacancies.
Glen helped carry the Gorloks in the fall half of the season, with a pair of second place finishes. Sullivan has rebounded in the spring after a forgettable fall half, and Black has three Top 10 finishes in his first season with Webster.
"They're all right there," Ahlering said. "I hope they all shoot well
