The roughly 3,238-mile walk will be completed by juniors Jonathan Fournier, audio production; Lauren Kirkwood, film production; Matt Grant, film production; and Katelyn Minnick, dance. They will be embarking May 26 to make a documentary of their trip.
The Documentary
The focal point of the documentary will be small-town life and how people are making a difference by helping others in towns across America, focusing on the people they will meet on their trip. It is not about the trip itself and the walkers' journey.
"The point of the documentary is service to others," Grant said. "We are looking for places to volunteer and organizations and shelters to help with as well as the people who are doing great things in their community."
The movie also will feature their interactions with people they meet.
"We want to show how lending a hand transforms relationships," Minnick said.
They hope to encourage those watching the documentary to believe they can make changes in their community.
"So many people make the excuse they do not have the energy and time to make a difference," Kirkwood said. "We want to show them that four college students with not much energy and time can make a difference and to spotlight those people within communities that do."
Their Journey
The trip will begin in Florence, Ore. Grant said the group wanted to start in Oregon because they will see a diverse landscape. They will begin by trekking through the mountains and the desert. They did not want to start in California because so many people who walk across the country start there.
