Being lofty and unorganized is a common stereotype for art students. A group of seniors are rebuking that notion by arranging their own art exhibit.
Seniors completing their Bachelor of Fine Arts degrees organized the Senior BFA Art Show to be held 6 to 10 p.m May 4. Art from all mediums will be on display at the Hoffman LaChance Gallery located at 3100 Sutton Blvd. in Maplewood.
"It was voted best gallery in town (in 2006) by the Riverfront Times," said senior art major Sarah Laurentius. "We picked it because it's new, and it's fresh."
The students are responsible for every aspect of the show from conception to execution. Students met every week to discuss the show's status, design an advertisement, choose a title and find a venue, Laurentius said.
Laurentius will present four photographs representing identity and perception. Her project was inspired by a visual culture class she took and by studying theorists such as Sigmund Freud.
After all of the preparation, Laurentius said she is anxious to display her art.
"I think it'll be nice to see all the work up together," Laurentius said. "Everyone has been working really, really hard these past couple of weeks helping each other get things done. To see the finished product, I think, will be really rewarding."
The 17 artists voted on the location and the show's title: "Stop Look Turn Repeat," which represents the act of looking at art and moving through a gallery, said Benjamin Beaury, a senior studio art major.
Beaury will display a series of etchings featuring his own face. He said his technique involves him pressing his face onto a plate where he is able to capture its image and later etch it. Beaury's piece focuses on gender issues and beauty.
"The art doesn't come from nowhere," Beaury said. "It's part of an intellectual conversation."
For these senior artists, the show is the culmination of what they have learned at Webster, but it's not the end, Beaury said. He plans to produce similar work after graduation.
