Ballard said the choreographers choose the dancers for their pieces and spend all semester running rehearsals and perfecting their dances.
"It was very different taking hold and separating myself out of that pier position and being in charge of rehearsals," Ballard said.
Kirsten Gardenberger choreographed a solo, group piece and duet. She said the BFA show is a really well-rounded process in which BFA candidates experience all aspects of planning a show, from choreography to costuming and publicity.
She said choreographers do more than just create dances.
"They use dance to express an idea," Gardenberger said.
She said if choreographers are doing it well, it's not just about performing moves dancers have already learned. She said it's about expanding dance and coming up with new movements.
Gardenberger's group piece, "With a Swing," is set to jazz music and is based on the instruments in the band.
"It's very shape-oriented," Gardenberger said. "A lot of the shapes are based on the instruments … and how they are played."
Gardenberger's duet piece is based on her experiences of being read Grimm's Fairy Tales as a child. She said her fairy tale inspiration won't be recognizable to the audience, because she intentionally left the choreography and music vague. She said she used the stories as a basis to create the movements.
The performances will be held at 7:30 p.m. May 3 and 4 and 2 p.m. May 5 on Stage 3 in Webster Hall. Admission is free.
