As a goalie for the soccer team, Reis picked up the Newcomer of the Year Award in 1998 and made the All-Conference team in 1998 and 1999. He was voted SLIAC Player of the Year in 1999 and helped the Gorloks win a SLIAC Championship in 2001. He holds the school record for most minutes played (3,151) and is second in Webster history in shutouts (20) and saves (198).
"What makes Jeff so special is he was Player of the Year in two sports," Hart said. "In both sports, he helped Webster get to the NCAA tournament."
On the field performances aside, Hart said Guelker and Reis, who was unavailable for comment, possessed other traits that made them obvious choices to be Webster's first representatives in the SLIAC Hall of Fame.
"In addition to their exploits on the field and on the court, they brought some of the other intangibles - the desire to succeed - which helped not just their individual programs, but the athletic department in general, to reach new heights," Hart said.
The athletic departments at each institution determine candidates and criteria for the SLIAC Hall of Fame, Hart said. The only bylaw is that potential candidates must wait five years upon completion of their SLIAC athletic careers before they are eligible for the Hall of Fame.
Hart, who is also vice president of the SLIAC, said the SLIAC will be accepting nominees for the Hall of Fame every year. Hart also promised the athletics department will nominate more Gorloks for induction.
"There are many deserving student athletes who have come through our program that we plan to nominate each year," Hart said.
