It had been a decade since Jerelyn Guelker spiked a volleyball for the Gorloks. So it must have been surprising when she answered her phone one day at work and heard the voice of Webster's Athletic Director Tom Hart on the receiving end.

Hart had an important message for Guelker. She was going to join fellow alum Jeff Reis as Webster's first two inductees into the St. Louis Intercollegiate Athletic Conference's Hall of Fame. The induction ceremony was held in February.

"There were so many great athletes while I attended Webster," said Guelker, who was a biology major at Webster. "I am so honored to be selected from all of them. I had no idea my volleyball career had such an impact on Webster athletics."

Guelker, who has since married as is now named Valin, was a middle hitter for Webster's volleyball team from 1994-1997. She was a two-time SLIAC Player of the Year (1996, 1997) and was named to three All-SLIAC teams (1995, 1996, 1997). She holds the Webster school record in solo blocks with 331 and is second all-time with 374 block assists.

However, Guelker's biggest accomplishments may have been helping lead the Gorloks to SLIAC Conference Championships in 1994, 1995 and 1997. The 1994 championship was the first in Webster's history and was a contributing factor into Guelker becoming Webster's first SLIAC Hall of Fame member.

"Jerelyn was an instrumental player in the first conference championship we had at Webster," Hart said. "We never won any conference championships until 1994. Those thresholds, those first-time award winners are always a little bit special. It seemed pretty much a natural to start with Jerelyn."

Joining Guelker in the Hall of Fame is Reis. Reis played basketball and soccer for the Gorloks after transferring to Webster from St. Louis Community College at Meramec. While Reis was only at Webster from 1998 to 2001, he left a lasting impression in both sports.

In basketball, Reis was voted SLIAC's Newcomer of the Year in 1999-2000 and was the SLIAC Player of the Year in 1999-2000 and 2000-2001. He holds the SLIAC record for most points in a game with the 53 points he registered in a Feb. 23, 2001 tilt against Maryville University and he led the Gorloks to a Conference title in the 1999-2000 season. Reis holds the SLIAC records for most points in two seasons with 1,236 points from 1999-2001 and he holds the Webster basketball records for points (697) and free throws made (316).
