From 1998 to 2002, the Webster University women's softball team was No.1 in the St. Louis Intercollegiate Athletic Conference. Now, having ended the 2007 season on a high note, the Gorloks are No.1 in the SLIAC again and hope to usher in another five years of SLIAC championships.

"When I was a freshman, there were seniors on the team who won the conference championship," junior pitcher Gail Vogt said. "They always told us how aesome it felt. Now that we've won this year, we know how cool it is and how great it feels."

With four wins against Greenville and Eureka College, the Gorloks secured the conference championship - the first since 2002. Now the softball team needs to stay focused and keep the momentum going, Head Coach Brett Swip said.

The first game in the April 28 doubleheader against Greenville wasn't an easy win. The Gorloks won the game 4-3, but Greenville pitcher Dana Fleshgren gave her team a good chance.

"It was a close game," Swip said. "We couldn't get the bats going how we liked. Offensively, the pitcher took us off balance and we didn't make the adjustments we needed at the plate.

During the second game, the pitcher changed early and we made changes, but it would have been nice to make the adjustments in the first game."

The Gorloks won the second game against Greenville 14-1.

"I don't know what happened during the first game," Vogt said. "I guess we were warming up or something. In the second game, we got ahead early and had some good hits. That's how we should have played in the first ."

The team traveled to Eureka College April 29 to make up for an April 25 doubleheader postponed due to bad weather.

Good offense and defense led to the Gorloks' sweep, 13-1 and 11-3. The games against Eureka were a big confidence booster for the Gorloks.

"We swung the bat well and ended the conference with good momentum," Swip said.

Concentrating on its game is one of the most important things the softball team can do now, Swip said.

"Everyone is 0-0 and it's a fresh start for all the teams playing," Swip said. "From a scouting perspective, we've seen these teams many times before. They know what we have and we know what they have."

Sophomore catcher and outfielder Dana Vahey was named the SLIAC Softball Hitter of the Week April 23 through 29. She was 10-14 with six RBI, nine runs scored, two doubles, a triple and a grand slam.

Freshman pitcher Lexie Moore was named the SLIAC Softball Pitcher of the Week April 23 through 29. Moore won twice, the 14-1 four-hitter against Greenville and a two-inning relief stint in the 13-1 win over Eureka. Moore allowed just 8 hits in 10 innings.

The Gorloks ended the regular season with an overall record of 21-16 and a SLIAC record of 15-1.
