With the regular season coming to a close and the Saint Louis Intercollegiate Athletic Conference Tournament looming on the horizon, the Webster University women's soccer team has been nothing short of brilliant. The 14-3 Gorloks are in a three-way tie for first place in the conference rankings with Principia College and Maryville University. They are ranked third in the nation in goals scored, with 4.85 goals per game through Oct. 7.
WU also has two players ranked in the top 10 goal scorers in the NCAA Division III. Sophomore forward Kelsey McClure is sixth with 3.23 goals per game and freshman midfielder Christy Capkovic is tenth with 3.08. A win for the team on Oct. 24 against Westminster College will ensure WU's seventh conference title in nine years.
The Gorloks suffered their third loss of the season Oct. 19, dropping the non-conference home game 1-0 to Maryville. It is the second time this season that Webster's high-powered offense was shut down by the Saints.
The Gorloks were able to shake off the loss, however, as they hosted the University of Dallas Oct. 20. The 5-0 shutout was sophomore netminder Jessica Kozeny's ninth of the season. A pair of goals by McClure and Capkovic's three assists again illustrated the kind of offensive force this team has become.
"It was a true team effort from everyone in Saturday's Senior Day game," said Head Coach Luigi Scire. "Our defenders denied Dallas any opportunities on goal. All our midfielders and forwards worked very hard and played unselfish soccer."
As Scire looks ahead to the post season, he is confident and optimistic.
"If we can find a way to bottle the emotional and physical effort put forth last game for our remaining two games, we will make some noise down the stretch," Scire said.
Webster hosts Westminster College at 6 p.m. Oct. 24 at the Anheuser Busch Soccer Park, and a Gorlok victory clinches the conference title. The team plays at 5 p.m. on Oct. 29. at Principia College in the last game of the regular season.
