The Ampersand, Webster University's student magazine, was awarded the Best in Show at the 86th annual Associated Collegiate Press / College Media Advisors National College Media Convention Oct. 28 in Washington, D.C.

The magazine was nominated for a Pacemaker award for its Spring 2007 edition. It received the Best in Show award , but did not win the Pacemaker, the highest award given to colleges and universities nationwide for print media.

The Best in Show award is given to the top-rated publication in each of the several categories present at the conference.

Categories of Pacemakers are newspaper, magazine, online, yearbook and individual awards. Individual awards are design, story of the year, photo excellence, advertising, cartooning and reporter of the year.

The Best in Show is given for newspaper, magazine, yearbook and broadcasting.

Managing Editor Gail Vogt, senior advertising and marketing major, Anthony Hagan, junior fashion journalism major and Kelly Kendall, sophomore journalism major attended the conference as representatives of the Ampersand.

"It was great, it means that all the hard work was worth it," Hagan said. "The Pacemaker was only judged by one publication, so the award was kind of subjective. The Best in Show meant that we were No. 1 in somebody's eyes. It also gave us reassurance that we were competing at a professional level."

Vogt said that the Best in Show was special because the judges were seasoned professionals with more than 20 years of experience each who have seen many magazines before. Judges are professional non-ACP staff persons knowledgeable about magazine production, according to the ACP/CMA Web site.

"They are very respected in the field and have seen the trends," she said.

The Ampersand was judged favorably for photography and layout. Vogt said the judge thought they used trained photographers for the magazine. Vogt said that many of the photographs were actually taken by staff who had not done photography for publication before were trained during the semester.

"All of the staff is expected to be able to do everything, including the photography," she said.

Out of the total entries submitted by all of the national publications, a finalist award is given to the top 14 magazines nationwide

Kendall said the reaction was positive despite not winning the Pacemaker.

"Now we know what we need to do to be better," she said. "We will come back stronger next semester and can only improve after this experience."
