President of the Missouri Botanical Gardens, Peter H. Raven speaks at the Holden Public Policy Forum on sustainability Oct. 25 at the Old Post Office campus. Raven urges people to accept that global warming is affecting the earth and claims that the constant population growth, over consumption, and technology are the sources for this problem. He has been involved in research programs in North and South America, Africa and Asia. "You can be as rich as you want, but you still have to breathe the same air," he says concerning the choice some industries are forced to make whether to clean up or continue using harmful processes. Raven encourages people to use biodiversity to build global sustainability. He says people rely on biodiversity for medicinal, ecological and life enriching purposes. Finally, Raven urges people to inspire children to be environmentally conscious and to promote an international understanding of the environment.
