In the future, Webster University may open even more doors for students. The Professional Development Center, which already aids students with resume writing and internship searches, is in the planning phase for adding portfolio development to the center's career planning advantages.
"We would like an all-inclusive portfolio development and internship hub - where it's all handled in one office." said Susan Napoleon, coordinator for the School of Communications. "A one-stop shopping kind of deal."
The goal would be to make the process of preparing for interviews, internships and job searching simpler with a prepared and professional portfolio.
The Director for the Development Center, Mindy Berkowitz, would also be in charge of the portfolio development, Napoleon said. She already coordinates internships under the Professional Development Center, portfolio development would be a second entity to the center.
"Right now we're in the very early stages of planning," Berkowitz said.
She said they are brainstorming models, allocating space and making recommendations.
"We have commitment from the Dean of the School of Communications," she said. "But it's still in its very early stages."
Within the next year, faculty plans to continue developing models and doing research for the center.
Debra Carpenter, School of Communications dean, said this was the next stage in professional development for students. She said she wants students to be able to leave WU with a CD or DVD portfolio of their work.
"It's just another step to help students move from being students of media to being practitioners of media," Carpenter said.
She said the School of Communications has identified a need for a technological advance in portfolio development and have goals.
"It's forward thinking," she said. "Right now it's just a concept. We haven't even put together a committee yet."
